The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
