No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the national leader.

The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
